Leonard Bernstein’s "Candide" is a sparkling comic operetta that blends biting satire with dazzling music. Based on Voltaire’s classic novella, it follows the optimistic young Candide as he journeys through a world of absurd misfortunes—war, betrayal, and loss—while clinging to his belief that all is for the best. Bernstein’s brilliant score mixes Broadway flair with operatic grandeur, featuring the beloved aria “Glitter and Be Gay” and the stirring finale “Make Our Garden Grow.” With wit, heart, and philosophical depth, Candide remains a joyful yet thought-provoking exploration of innocence, experience, and the search for meaning in a chaotic world.
Produced and performed by The Atlanta Opera in March 2023.
