"Steele Roots," a new chamber opera by composer Dave Ragland and librettist Selda Sahin, explores the power of ancestry, memory, and belonging. Blending classical and contemporary musical styles, the work follows the life of Carrie Steele, a formerly enslaved woman whose love for children leaves a lasting legacy. Uncovering hidden stories of their family’s past, a young protagonist discovers strength and purpose through generations of resilience. Ragland’s soulful score and Sahin’s evocative text intertwine to create an emotionally rich experience.
Produced and performed by The Atlanta Opera in June 2025.
